Since elected in 2017, the Tarrant County Jail has had 69 deaths through December 31, 2024 under the supervision of Bill Waybourn.
There were 9 deaths in 2024 with just under 5000 inmates. Harris County, with double the inmate population, had the same number of deaths in 2024.
It is the family's opinion that Sherriff Waybourn is incompetent to continue as Sherriff of Tarrant County and must be removed. Either with the Tarrant County Commissioners Court or by the family, the Sherriff will be removed under Chapter 87 of the Texas Local Government Code.

In May of 2024, the NIC performed an inspection of Tarrant County Jail. While this had been ordered by Sherriff Waybourn months earlier, the timing was less than 30 days from the murder of inmate Anthony Johnson. It is our opinion that the Sherriff was on "best behavior" for the inspection following Anthony Johnson's death.
The report highlights throughout the document of areas for improvement and recommendations for the Jail. To date, there has been no report from Tarrant County Jail on the review and implementation of the NIC recommendations.
Had the Jail followed the NIC document, would Mason be alive?
Since 2017, the State of Texas has had over 1700 inmate in custody deaths. Most are considered medically related and brushed under the proverbial rug. No one should die while waiting to hear their day in court.
Below is a spreadsheet of In Custody Deaths in Texas from 2017 current to February 5, 2025.
